Authorities in Zaporizhzhya report that Ukrainian Armed Forces are targeting a spent nuclear fuel storage facility

The Ukrainian armed forces are trying to get into the concrete storage facilities at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, where thousands of tons of radioactive waste are stored. This was announced by Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration of Zaporozhye, on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24”.

He stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had chosen the storage of spent nuclear fuel and the reactor cooling system as targets. At least three hits were recorded in the storage area.

As a result of the shelling of the nuclear power plant, the high-voltage line of the Kakhovskaya substation was damaged, and a fire broke out in the field due to a break in power lines. The station’s specialists were ordered to move to secure premises. No pollution was recorded at the station, the radiation background is normal.

Before that, social media users reported that smoke was rising from the nuclear power plant. Rogov noted that strikes are carried out using MLRS and heavy artillery from the right bank of the Dnieper, from the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, as well as from the settlements of Nikopol, Marganets and Tomakovka, which are under the control of Ukraine.
