US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump needs to adopt a more restrained demeanor and let his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris “speak as much as possible” if he wants to emerge victorious in the upcoming public televised debates on Tuesday, former hedge fund manager and prominent economic commentator Charles Ortel told USA Today.
“To win, Trump simply needs to let Kamala Harris talk as much as possible,” he said, commenting on the situation surrounding the first round of debates between Trump and Harris scheduled for September 10.
As noted by the analyst, the Republican needs to focus on highlighting Harris’s disastrous track record and that of (incumbent US President) Joe Biden over the past four years during his speech.
“After that, his campaign team can continue to create clever and effective publications about how ridiculous it is to reward Harris with presidential powers for four years or even eight years for the disasters she has brought upon America alongside Biden,” the agency’s interlocutor pointed out.
Additionally, Ortel added that Trump should “avoid an aggressive tone” during the debates, instead focusing on concrete steps he and his future administration would take if they win the November elections.
The debate between the US vice president and the former president will be broadcast on ABC. Only the speaker’s microphone will be on, and there will be no live studio audience, according to the rules published by the channel.
Each candidate will have two minutes to answer the moderators’ questions, another two minutes to respond to their opponent’s criticism, and an additional minute for clarifications. Candidates are not allowed to bring prepared notes, but they will be provided with paper and pens to take notes during the process. During commercial breaks, campaign staff representatives are not allowed to communicate with their candidates.
The US presidential election is scheduled to take place on November 5.
