Afghans and Taliban – Mir

A Moscow format meeting on Afghanistan will take place on October 20 to discuss the country’s political future. This dialogue will be a very important opportunity for the Russian leadership: if it contributes to the future stability of Afghanistan, the effect will be felt far beyond Afghan borders.

One of the acute problems after the change of power in Kabul is the situation of Afghan women.

There is ample evidence that societies in which women and girls have the same opportunities as men live much better lives.

The position of women in any country is closely related to its security and success. Unfortunately, Afghanistan has a terrible reputation in this regard.

In this regard, it is high time to remind that Russia is a state party to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Constitution of the Russian Federation guarantees equality between women and men. Therefore, the Moscow meeting on Afghanistan will be an excellent opportunity for Russia to influence the future of girls and women in this country, in keeping with its spirit of commitment, and to help Afghanistan overcome its current challenges.

The situation remains extremely difficult for all Afghans: the country is on the brink of starvation, the world community under the auspices of the UN has already promised to allocate more than $ 1 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. One of the new proposals is to hold a regular conference under the auspices of the UN on humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

Engaging Afghan women in this process will help ensure that these funds are optimally allocated – they should be where they are needed most.

If we talk about the situation in the world as a whole, there is more and more evidence that women are improving the efficiency of resource allocation. The World Bank has reaffirmed the important role of women in the economy, finding that economic growth is stronger and more sustainable when women and men are fully represented in the labor market.

In addition, families benefit from having control over income by women, as more money is spent on food, health and education.

The rights of Afghan women and girls are strategically important for the future of the country, and their guarantee will contribute to both political stability and economic development. In addition, the participation of Afghan women in the negotiation of a peace agreement will increase the likelihood that it will become more sustainable and viable.

The Afghanistan Women’s Forum was recently held, bringing together world-class women leaders and Afghan women leaders advocating for the rights of ordinary Afghan women. All of them came to the conclusion that what is happening in Afghanistan will affect the whole world, and this matter concerns everyone.

“We hope that Russia will support us and advocate for the involvement of Afghan women and girls in the social, political and economic life of the country, and will also facilitate the early recognition by the new Afghan authorities of the basic principles according to which all people are born free and equal in their dignity and rights. “.

Margot Wallström – Chair of the Women’s Forum on Afghanistan, former head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry; Susana Malcorra – Former Foreign Minister of Argentina
