Additional units of the Syrian army sent to the line of contact. This was announced on June 17 by Rear Admiral Oleg Zhuravlev, Deputy Head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in Syria.

According to him, this decision was made due to the growth of provocations by militants.

“In connection with the growing number of provocations by illegal armed groups, the command of the Syrian army sent additional units to the line of contact,” he said.

According to Zhuravlev, over the past day in the Idlib de-escalation zone there were 16 shellings from the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group (the organization’s activities are banned in Russia). Thus, shelling was recorded in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Latakia.

In addition, one Syrian soldier was wounded near the village of Kavkaba.

Earlier, on June 15, Russian presidential envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said that Turkey’s special operation in Syria could provoke an escalation of tension in the region. Moscow recommended Ankara to resolve the situation peacefully.

Prior to this, on June 5, Zhuravlev said that illegal armed formations had intensified in the Idlib de-escalation zone after Turkey’s statements about the start of a military operation. He clarified that the command of the militants is accumulating reserves, intensifying training and combat activity.

The conflict in Syria has been going on since 2011. In 2015, the Russian Armed Forces, at the invitation of Damascus, began to assist in the liberation of Syrian territory from militants. Two years later, the Russian command announced the end of the active phase of the military operation.
