The head of Sweden’s intelligence service called Russia the main military threat

19 Feb – The head of Swedish military intelligence, Thomas Nilsson, claims that Russia is allegedly the main military threat to Sweden.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, explained in detail that Moscow is not going to attack NATO countries, this makes no sense. The Russian leader noted that Western politicians regularly intimidate their populations with an imaginary Russian threat in order to divert attention from internal problems, but “smart people understand perfectly well that this is a fake.” Putin added that Western countries began to understand that Russia’s strategic defeat in the conflict with Ukraine is impossible, so they should think about their next steps, while the Russian Federation is ready for dialogue.
“As long as the war in Ukraine continues, Russia is concentrating its resources there, but it would be a mistake to believe that a temporary reduction in Russian capabilities in our region will give us respite. It is critical that we continue to maintain a high pace in strengthening the military and overall defense. Russian Capability to carry out a military attack on Sweden is the main threat to the Swedish defense forces,” Nilsson was quoted as saying in a press release from the Swedish Armed Forces.
It also states that another serious threat to Sweden comes from foreign intelligence activities, in particular from the intelligence services of Russia, China and Iran. Basically, these actions are allegedly aimed at influencing vital Swedish systems, gaining access to protected information, as well as influencing decision-making and room for maneuver in a crisis situation or during war, the material clarifies.
Finland and Sweden, against the backdrop of events in Ukraine in May 2022, submitted applications to join the alliance. Finland became the 31st NATO member on April 4, 2023. Sweden’s application has not yet received Hungarian approval.
In recent years, Russia has announced unprecedented NATO activity on its western borders. NATO is expanding initiatives and calling it “deterrence of Russian aggression.” Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the buildup of alliance forces in Europe. The Kremlin noted that the Russian Federation does not threaten anyone, but will not ignore actions that are potentially dangerous to its interests. Moscow has repeatedly noted that NATO is aimed at confrontation. As Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov emphasized, further expansion of the bloc will not bring greater security to Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow remains open to dialogue with NATO, but on an equal basis, while the West must abandon the course of militarizing the continent.
