A referendum on updating the constitution begins in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, April 30, 2023, 07:09 — REGNUM In Uzbekistan, on April 30, voting began at a referendum on the constitution in a new edition. Voting will last from 08:00 to 20:00 local time (06:00 – 18:00 Moscow time).

The republican CEC informed that over 19.7 million people will be able to participate in the referendum. There are 14 district election commissions and 10,758 polling stations. More than 611 thousand citizens voted early.
Among the amendments to the constitution, it is planned to reduce the number of senators from 100 to 65, a moratorium on the death penalty, extradition of a citizen of Uzbekistan to a foreign state. The powers of the lower house of parliament to control the execution of the state budget are also fixed.
As reported IA REGNUM, the new version of the constitution of Uzbekistan introduced a norm according to which, along with the post of president of the country, the same person cannot hold the positions of speaker of the chairman of the Senate, chairman of the CEC, Legislative Chamber, chairman of the Supreme Court, prosecutor general, chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of Judges and several other positions. For the first time in a referendum, a system of biometric identification of citizens will be used.
