A new strain of coronavirus “deltacron” was discovered in Russia. What is known about him?

Immunologist Kostinov told how to protect yourself from the deltacron strain

In Russia, a new strain of coronavirus has been discovered – “Russian Deltacron”. It was first identified in St. Petersburg, Rospotrebnadzor confirmed six cases of the disease. “360” has collected everything that is known about the new mutation.

A new strain of coronavirus

Russian scientists have found a new strain of coronavirus during research in St. Petersburg – “deltacron”. Rospotrebnadzor said that all six patients with deltacron in St. Petersburg suffered a mild illness.

The danger of this variant of the virus has yet to be studied, as there have been no confirmed cases of infection in other countries. Previously, the discovery of “deltacron” was reported in Cyprus, but scientists concluded that this was a mistake – all cases of detection of a new strain in the analyzes were presumably caused by contamination of the samples.

What is a “deltacron”?

“Deltacron” is a new strain of coronavirus that has become a hybrid of “delta” and “omicron”. It was discovered by scientists from the Smorodintsev Institute of Influenza in St. Petersburg in samples collected in July and August this year.

Little is known about the dangers of the deltacron. How contagious it is and whether it will become the dominant strain in Russia also remains to be seen. At the same time, geneticist Dmitry Pruss told RBCthat one of the main questions now is – did the “deltacron” take over the ability to hit the lungs strongly from the “delta”?

Olga Kopylova, the host of the “Advise, Doctor” program, who was the first to pay attention to the appearance of the “deltacron”, explained that the new mutation has “a head and a tail from the delta, a middle, including most of the spike, from BA.2, and one mutation from BA.1 (BA.1 and BA.2 – variations of the “omicron” – ed.) ”. She reported this in her Telegram channel.

The Delta strain was first spotted in India in late 2020 and quickly spread around the world, but was soon supplanted by the more contagious South African variant Omicron. The latter was characterized by a less severe course; in June 2022, it was Omicron that accounted for more than 98% of cases of infection in Russia.

According to the head of the laboratory of the State Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums. I. I. Mechnikov of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, immunologist Mikhail Kostinov, you should not panic because of the “deltacron”, because new variations of the virus appear very often, but not all of them are widely used.

Every three weeks there are new mutations, this is nothing special

Mikhail Kostinov.

“Hybrids will continue, they are not more dangerous, they are just new varieties. Because people have cellular memory – even if six months or a year has passed, anyway, if the organ met with the virus, the memory remains, and it will not be so dangerous when they meet again, ”he emphasized.

How does the “deltacron” proceed and for whom it is dangerous

There is no reason to think that Deltacron will seriously affect the lungs, as it did with the Delta strain, yet, since the disease was mild in all registered patients.

At the same time, Mikhail Kostinov warned that any variation of the coronavirus is especially dangerous for risk groups: the elderly, people with chronic diseases and weakened immune systems. Even if they tolerate the disease easily, there is a risk of developing severe consequences after recovery.

“For those who have various health disorders, that is, for chronic patients and people with concomitant diseases, there remains a danger: there may be side effects that can persist for a long time – the so-called post-covid syndrome with a protracted course,” explained Kostinov.

Will the deltacron vaccine help?

According to Mikhail Kostinov, you can protect yourself from a new infection by returning to precautionary measures: maintaining social distance, wearing masks and maintaining strict hand hygiene.

The immunologist also urged Russians to remember about vaccination, which still remains the main preventive measure. Sputnik V, according to Kostinov, copes with the protection against new strains and reduces the risk of serious consequences.

“Our vaccines have been proven to work against omicron: two doses of Sputnik V protect against it by 75%, and if revaccinated, up to 100% in the first three months,” he stressed.
