Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Left the Country at the Insistence of Her Family

Prime Minister , resigned from her post and left the country on Monday amid unrest, did so at the insistence of her family, according to NDTV. Her son and former adviser, Joy, who resides in the , made the statement.

“She wanted to stay, she did not want to leave the country at all. But we kept insisting that it was not safe for her. First of all, we were worried about her physical safety, so we convinced her to leave,” Joy said in an interview with NDTV.

“This situation is very upsetting for her because she dreamed of making Bangladesh a developed country. She worked hard for the last 15 years, protecting the country from militants and terrorism, and despite all this, the opposition and militants seized power,” he added.

On Monday, Sheikh Hasina and her sister left their official residence in Dhaka for a safer location amid the unrest. News18 reported that Hasina resigned and flew to the Indian city of Agartala.

Protests and demonstrations began in Dhaka and across the country following the announcement of a multi-day “non-cooperation action” with the authorities, launched on August 4 by the Student Movement Against Discrimination organization.

Clashes between anti-government students and police, along with government supporters, escalated into riots.
