Armed militants from Baloch Liberation Army attacked a passenger train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province taking over 400 passengers hostage. Group fired shots and detonated bombs during the attack causing fear of heavy casualties.

Local authorities declared an emergency at nearby hospitals in Sibi district. Ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the scene.

According to Pakistan’s railway authorities, targeted train Jaffar Express, departed Quetta at 9:00 AM heading for Peshawar. Attack occurred while the train passed through a mountainous area in Balochistan’s Kach district.
Six armed men opened fire on the train, injuring the driver. Despite injuries driver managed to bring the train to a safe stop.
Baloch Liberation Army threatened to kill hostages if rescue efforts were attempted. Group has long fought for an independent Balochistan.

Since January, Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in militant attacks. At least 91 people including 53 security personnel have died in 74 attacks this year.
