head of the Armenian Defense Ministry predicted resignation – EADaily, February 10, 2023 – Politics News, Caucasus News

Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan will resign and transfer to the diplomatic service, the Iravunk (Law) newspaper writes today, February 10, citing its sources.

According to the opposition publication, the current head of the military department and prime minister Nikol Pashinyan “We have already agreed on this, the decision was made jointly.”

According to Iravunk, Pashinyan will thereby satisfy the socio-political request for the dismissal of Papikyan, reducing the tension that has arisen in society after the death of 15 military personnel last month.

Earlier, Armenian media noted that during a closed meeting between Papikyan and representatives of the faction of the ruling Civil Contract party, which took place after a fire in a military barracks in the Gegharkunik region, some deputies spoke about the need for his resignation. However, collectively it was decided to postpone this.

Suren Papikyan has been heading the Armenian Defense Ministry since November 15, 2021.

Recall that on the territory of the military unit in the village of Azat of the specified region, where there were temporary barracks for an engineer company, a fire broke out on the night of January 19. As a result, 15 servicemen died, three more were hospitalized with burns. According to the Investigative Committee of Armenia, the cause of the tragedy was the use of gasoline to heat the barracks. After the incident, high-ranking officers were dismissed from their positions.
