Lavrov announced progress in the creation of the Russian base – EADaily, February 10, 2023 – Politics, Russia News

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that an agreement on Russia’s establishment of a naval base on the Sudanese Red Sea coast is moving forward. This is reported by the news portal Middle East Monitor.

After meeting with the military ruler of Sudan Abdelfattah al-Burhan Sergey Lavrov noted:

“You know that this agreement was signed earlier between the two countries, and it is only waiting for legislative consolidation.”

In 2021, Sudan said it froze an agreement with Russia because it was signed under the regime of a former president ousted in a military coup. Omar al-Bashir.

The US ambassador to Sudan warned Khartoum that the African country should not allow Russia to establish a naval base, as this would allegedly harm the country’s interests.

Lavrov also welcomed Sudan’s decision to close its borders with the Central African Republic (CAR) to prevent the movement of armed groups.
