Former JNUSU President and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani have joined the Congress party today. He has got the membership of the party in front of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Earlier, Kanhaiya Kumar and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani were also present at Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Park along with Rahul Gandhi.
On both joining the Congress party general secretary KC Venugopal said, “We look forward to working with these young leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Jignesh Mevani to defeat the fascist forces ruling the country.”
Kanhaiya Kumar: Kanhaiya Kumar belongs to Begusarai district of Bihar. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he also tried his electoral method from the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat. However, he had to face defeat against BJP leader Giriraj Singh by a huge margin of 4 lakhs. Begusarai has been considered to have the largest number of Bhumihar voters and Kanhaiya Kumar also belongs to the Bhumihar caste. So he failed to prove himself. Despite this, the party believes that a new face is needed in Bihar. He has organizational experience as a student leader. Bihar Congress leaders say that the party will benefit from Kanhaiya’s arrival because Kanhaiya is fighting the same issues and battles that Congress has been raising.
Jignesh Mevani: The trio of Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani played an important role in the 2017 elections. Hardik Patel has joined Congress. At the same time, Alpesh Thakor went to the BJP. But Jignesh Mevani never made any compromise and he has been fighting with BJP continuously. There are seven per cent Dalits in Gujarat and 13 seats are reserved for them. In the last elections, the BJP had won most of the reserved seats. At that time Jignesh Mevani was confined to his seat and Congress did not field a candidate against him. But with Mevani joining the Congress, the picture may change.
