Charanjit Singh Channi has been embroiled in a new controversy as soon as he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab. National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma has called Channi a threat to women’s safety, who was accused of sending obscene messages to a woman IAS officer during the ‘Me Too Movement’ in 2018. He expressed surprise that a party led by a woman has made Channi the CM of Punjab.
Rekha Sharma said, “Allegations were leveled against him (Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi) during the Me Too movement of 2018. The State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognizance of the matter and the chairperson sat on a dharna demanding her removal, but nothing happened.” Channi was then a minister in the Amarinder government.
Sharma further said, “Today he has been made the Chief Minister of Punjab by a party headed by a woman. This is cheating. He is a threat to women’s safety. There should be an inquiry against them. He doesn’t deserve to be the chief minister. I appeal to Sonia Gandhi (interim president of Congress) to remove her from the post of Chief Minister.
In the year 2018, a woman IAS officer had alleged that Charanjit Singh Channi had sent her obscene messages. After this, Punjab Women’s Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati had asked the state government to take action while seeking a report. Channi was the Technical Education Minister of Punjab at that time. After Channi became the CM, once again many people are raising this issue.
