11 Hindus convicted of gang rape of a pregnant Muslim woman released

A court released from prison 11 Hindus convicted of gang raping a pregnant Muslim woman in early 2008. The men were supposed to remain behind bars for the rest of their lives, but were released ahead of schedule for good behavior, writes CNN, citing a statement from an official.

This judgment drew condemnation from the victim’s widower, some lawyers and politicians. But, according to Indian law, prisoners who have spent more than 14 years in prison are eligible for pardon.

Recall that the attackers were convicted almost 15 years ago, and the crime itself was committed during the Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002. The prisoners were serving their sentences in Panchmahalsa in the western state of Gujarat and were released on the day of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of British rule.
