Prior to this, India had played only 2 ODIs against England in the year 1974 and lost in both. At that time the command of the Indian team was in the hands of Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan. Eight teams took part in the first World Cup. The England team had come out as a strong contender for the title.

After this, Team India made a tremendous comeback by defeating East Africa in their second match and registered their first win in One Day International cricket.

Sunil Gavaskar and Engineer lead Team India to victory
Sunil Gavaskar and Farooq Engineer opened for India. Both batted brilliantly and gave India victory in 29.5 overs. Indian team won the match by 10 wickets without losing any wicket. Gavaskar returned with an unbeaten 65 and Engineer 54 not out.
West Indies won the World Cup title by defeating England
The Indian team had to face defeat by 4 wickets against New Zealand in the third match. Team India failed to reach the next round. West Indies defeated England by 17 runs in the final to win their first World Cup title.
