Tesla to update software on more than one million electric vehicles

Tesla Inc has notified Chinese market regulators that it will release software updates for more than 1 million electric vehicles (EVs) to make changes to braking systems and provide additional warnings about the use of accelerator pedals.

The move is being described as a “product recall” under Chinese regulations, the regulator added, but it’s not yet clear if drivers can request or be eligible to return Tesla electric vehicles for a refund.

Beginning May 29, the American automaker will roll out software updates to 1.1 million S, X, 3 and Y electric vehicles, including those imported into the country and those assembled in China, according to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

The statement notes that these electric vehicles did not allow drivers to turn off the regenerative braking function and did not provide enough warning when the driver pressed the accelerator pedal hard, which together could increase the risk of a collision.

The software update will restore the ability to turn off regenerative braking and warn drivers when they press the accelerator pedal hard, the statement added.

Regenerative braking allows you to save the energy received when the car slows down and transfer the excess to the batteries to increase its range. Tesla has disabled the ability to disable this system on electric vehicles manufactured after 2020.

Some consumers in China welcomed the technology, also known as “one-pedal control”, as it allowed them to bring the car to a complete stop without using the brake pedal.

However, others have complained that it can be confusing for drivers and increase the risk of misapplying the accelerator pedal.

Chinese police were investigating an accident involving a Model Y car that killed a motorcyclist and a schoolgirl and injured three people when the driver lost control of the electric vehicle last November.

Tesla said at the time that video footage showed that the car’s brake lights were off during its high-speed movement, and the data pointed to problems such as not trying to apply the brakes during the entire trip.
